- The art of Co-living - or how to decorate 4 flats on a budget for short-term rentals.

Colive is a Brussels start-up that offers private rooms for rent in uni-familial houses -
Colive makes a point of honour to select only exceptional properties -
to be sharing the common areas with 6 -10 other ‘colivers’.

Coliving is more than just a trend, it is a concept, an evolution towards new ways
of living collectively. It results from growing especially millennial tenants that are seeking
flexibility, community life, a sense of togetherness while having their own space.

Coliving spaces are fully furnished, offer private spaces (a bedroom + a bathroom),
shared spaces (a kitchen with a dining area, a living room, working space,
a gym and sometimes even a bar).

They also provide with services such as: all bills included, Netflix account, discounts
on meals delivery, on bike rentals, group classes, brunches, community bonding etc.

So Coliving isn’t just finding flatmates to cut down the rent, it attracts not only student
but also young professionals, expats that need to stay regularly away from home,
traveling youth that want a short lease or even people divorcing, in need of a friendly &
furnished place in a rather quickly manner.

The interior design contribution here is essential to bring balance between
private spaces and common areas.

Indeed, our tenants are seeking this togetherness, belonging to a community
while developing an ‘at home feeling’in their rooms,
regardless it being their home for a month or 2 years.

My job on this project is to create an atmosphere that enhance all the above.
The flats are fully furnished in the common areas and furnished
at 70% in the bedrooms, so each tenant can make it theirs by customising it,
bringing their belongings or even extra furnishings.

The most of the work is to be done in the common areas, especially
the kitchen and the living room as these spaces are the central pieces
where the ‘colivers’ are to cross paths, meet, share a meal,
have a conversation, by day or by night.

The biggest challenge was the really low budget:
It was a priority to provide each room with an attractive style and decoration,
a comfortable space filled with charm to live in effortlessly with everything needed,
well equipped and practical, at your own pace or collectively.

As we have 4 identical flats on top of each other, we decided to give each one theme
and identity. we then cut down to two different themes : Jungle and Safari.

The idea is to convey a style into 3 dimensions into each apartment.
A home, a comfortable home is warm, organic, welcoming.
This year it is really hard to travel, so why not bringing the voyage home?

What better feeling is there than being home, surrounded by lush green nature
filled with wild animals hiding at the heart of a tropical paradise, listening to the rain outside
while sipping a warm tea or warming up to cozy, rich textures and earthy evoking the African
savannah watching & photos of your last trip on your comfy sofa…?
